What each pass actually covers

The Hola Barcelona Travel Card is pure transport: unlimited metro, bus, tram and the airport metro line for 48, 72, 96 or 120 hours. The Barcelona Card bundles that same transport with free entry to about 25 museums and discounts at 70 more. The Barcelona Card Express is a cheaper 2-day version with discounts but fewer free entries.

Real price math for a family of four

Take two adults and two kids aged 6 and 9 for 3 days. Four Hola BCN 72-hour cards cost about 100 euros total (kids over 4 pay full fare). Add separate tickets for Aquarium, Cosmocaixa and Park Guell and you are near 200 euros. Four Barcelona Cards at 72 hours cost about 184 euros but include several of those museum entries, often landing 30 to 50 euros cheaper if you hit 3 or more paid attractions.

When Hola BCN wins

Choose the transport-only card if your trip leans on free attractions: beaches, Park Guell free zone and Ciutadella park, the Magic Fountain and Bunkers viewpoint. You skip paying for museums you will not visit and the airport line is included both ways.

When the Barcelona Card wins

Choose the bundled card if you plan a museum-heavy trip: Picasso Museum, MNAC, the Maritime Museum, the Music Palace and the Blue Museum all give free entry. With kids who love science and aquarium visits the math tips in its favor quickly.

The third option most families forget

If you only need a couple of attractions, skip both passes. Buy a single Hola BCN transport card per person and book skip the line tickets individually. For PortAventura or a Montserrat day trip the passes do not apply anyway. Browse standalone family pass and combo options here to see prices live.

Quick decision rule

  • 0 to 2 paid museums: Hola BCN card plus separate tickets
  • 3 or more paid museums: Barcelona Card
  • Mostly day trips and beaches: single transport tickets only
  • Kids all under 4: adults buy Hola BCN, kids ride free

Frequently asked questions

It is worth it only if you visit 3 or more paid museums in 72 hours. The card costs around 46 euros and free entries to Picasso Museum, MNAC and the Maritime Museum add up fast. For a beach and park trip with one or two museums, the cheaper Hola BCN transport card plus separate tickets works out cheaper.

Children under 4 travel free on Barcelona metro and bus and do not need any card. Kids 4 and up pay the same fare as adults, so each child over 4 needs their own Hola BCN card or single tickets. Factor this into your family math before buying.

Yes. The Hola Barcelona Travel Card covers the metro L9 Sud line to and from Barcelona airport at no extra cost, which alone saves about 5.50 euros per person each way versus the airport metro surcharge. This often makes the 2-day card pay for itself on arrival and departure.
